Skunk Control
WE OFFER SKUNK CONTROL, SKUNK ERADICATION SERVICES, AND PERMANENT SOLUTIONS TO PREVENT FUTURE SKUNK PROBLEMS
What are signs of a skunk problem? The striped skunk is Virginia’s “smelliest” species when it comes to wildlife/human conflict. Although a docile and slow-moving creature by nature, the skunk knows it has the ability to repel most common predators. Most of our customers who call us for skunk control and eradication in Central Virginia become aware of a skunk’s presence on their property…not from seeing it…but from smelling it, or their pet being sprayed by it. From Harrisonburg to Blacksburg, Richmond to Charlottesville and beyond – the pungent skunk spray odor unites our customers in frustration.
Where do skunks build dens? Once a skunk has found a home area that provides it with plenty of food and water, it will create a den. These dens could be in an abandoned groundhog den, but in most cases, skunks try to utilize existing structures to create their own den. After finding a hard-edged structure, such as a shed, sidewalk, deck, or front stoop, the skunk will burrow under the structure and create its den site, even right under your front door.
When do skunks breed in Virginia? After establishing their new home, skunks proceed to their breeding season in late February, and this is the second time most of our customers will become aware of a skunk on their property. In the breeding season, male skunks will travel up to five miles to visit the denning female skunk. During this process, lots of spraying occurs, and customers commonly will call us to describe “fighting” under their deck or in their crawl space. Once skunks have been identified, their removal is pretty straightforward but must be done with the correct traps in order to avoid a direct confrontation with the skunk once it is trapped.
If you believe that skunks have taken up residence under your home, business, or outbuilding, call Blue Ridge Wildlife & Fisheries Management today to schedule an appointment for skunk eradication.
Skunk Damage
BLUE RIDGE WILDLIFE & FISHERIES MANAGEMENT OFFERS SKUNK TRAPPING AND REMOVAL SERVICES.
Do skunks cause damage? The most common damage caused by skunks is the odor that they produce. If a skunk is under your deck, in your crawl space, or under one of your outbuildings, the smell can permeate the structure and stick around for weeks. In addition to the obvious problems with your smelly visitor, skunk dens can undermine sidewalks, building skirts, and decks. While not as prevalent as raccoons or opossums, skunks can also leave behind plenty of defecation if they are in a crawl space area, which could pose health risks to anyone working in those areas. If you suspect a skunk is in or near your home or business, call us about our skunk eradication services.
Skunk Removal
Since 2011, we have been providing solutions to skunk damage via trapping, exclusion, and control. We offer two main solutions:
Trapping
Trapping is the most budget-friendly and frequently requested service we offer for skunks. We use only professional-grade traps that are always covered to keep the animal sheltered from any elements from the time of capture until the time of pickup. This also keeps the client protected from the threat of being sprayed once the animal is captured. Trapping programs are typically priced with a fee to set the traps and then a per animal fee; however, with large-scale issues that need to address multiple families of skunks, we offer skunk eradication services per week or per month at a flat rate. That is more common for apartment complexes or commercial buildings.
Burial Fence
A burial fence is one of our favorite solutions for preventing skunk issues. Why? Because burial fencing offers our customers a solution to solve their current wildlife conflict and prevent future conflicts. Installed along the perimeter of decks, buildings, or sheds, our custom-fabricated burial fencing isn’t just the chicken wire you see on the neighbor’s deck next door. It will not allow any species to pass under that deck or building, now or in the future. We also love it because it allows us to “one way” the animal out of the area and forces it to relocate naturally.
Skunk Biology
AS A FULL-SERVICE COMPANY, WE PROVIDE A TRAPPING OR CONTROL PROGRAM FOR YOUR CURRENT SKUNK PROBLEM AND IMPLEMENT SAFEGUARDS AGAINST FUTURE SKUNK ISSUES.
- The average adult skunk is 3-8 pounds, but some can grow much larger.
- Skunks are typically black with a white stripe down their back and resemble the shape of a weasel. Virginia also plays host to a spotted skunk, but this species is rarely seen.
- Skunks reproduce in February, with a gestation period of 60 days, and give birth to litters of 3-6 young.
