Yes, woodpecker control is legal in Central Virginia, which hosts many woodpecker species ranging from quite small to over 12 inches in height. As a protected species, the only legal solution for preventing woodpecker damage is to lure the birds away from the structure. The woodpecker control methods are the same for every woodpecker species.

Yes. Woodpeckers damage Virginia homes and structures with three behaviors: foraging for food, calling for a mate, and making space for a nest.
The most common call we receive is “drumming” (searching) for insects. Unfortunately, woodpeckers can find a plethora of insects under some types of wood siding and may tear apart your home to find them.
“Mate Drumming” happens when a woodpecker announces itself to potential mates, using solid structures to “call,” much like a songbird. Woodpeckers will drum for a mate on wood siding, stucco, glass, or even a metal roof. Mate drumming and insect drumming can cause similar damage.
The third way woodpeckers cause damage is by opening a hole in structural siding or fascia to make room for a nest. Again, we see this cause of woodpecker damage far less often than the other two, but it does occur.
Blue Ridge Wildlife & Fisheries Management, LLC controls woodpeckers by deploying visual deterrents that usher the birds off and away from the structure. These deterrents can be either temporary or permanent, depending on the customer’s preference. Once installed, woodpeckers are effectively deterred from returning to the areas they were attacking. In some cases, we install deterrents on multiple sides of the house/business to prevent the birds from simply relocating around the structure.
