Aquatic Vegetation Control
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF INVASIVE PLANTS THAT CAN QUICKLY AND EASILY INFILTRATE AND TAKE OVER A POND IN A LIMITED AMOUNT OF TIME. A VERY COMMON RESULT IS UNATTRACTIVE ALGAE IN YOUR POND.
These plants can be brought in from runoff, wildlife, or in some cases introduced purposely by the owner. This aquatic vegetation can be controlled in numerous ways depending upon your desired result.
Commonly occurring aquatic vegetation throughout Virginia includes, but is not limited to:

- American Speedwell
- American Water Plantain
- American Water Willow
- Arrowhead, Long-beaked
- Arrow-leaved Tearthumb

Aquatic Plants
EACH OF THESE AQUATIC PLANTS OFFERS ITS OWN SET OF PROBLEMS TO A LANDOWNER. WE APPROACH EACH PROBLEM INDIVIDUALLY AND OFFER MANY VIABLE SOLUTIONS. LEARN ABOUT A FEW OF OUR TECHNIQUES BELOW.
Buffer Zone Modification
Aquatic plants, whether desirable or undesirable, can quickly take over a pond or lake with too many nutrients. Algae in your pond can be an unappealing result. Nutrients are the main cause of excessive aquatic plant growth. When aiming to control aquatic vegetation from a cause/effect standpoint, controlling the nutrient input would be a viable option. Creating a buffer zone using specific plants and grasses will help to curb the nutrient load.
Aquatic Vegetation Removal
Sometimes plants simply become an eyesore or don’t turn out quite the way the owner had hoped. Entirely removing aquatic vegetation is a viable option when dealing with plants that can completely consume a pond (i.e., cattails, lily pads, hydrilla. etc.). We offer annual partial removals and full one-time removals.
Triploid Stocking
In some cases, aquatic vegetation may not be completely out of control, but is simply a threat to become so if not monitored. A natural way to make sure the vegetation is kept in check is to introduce triploid grass carp to the system, to maintain the vegetation through their diet. It is important to note that Blue Ridge Wildlife & Fisheries Management, LLC is a permaculture-based company, which means we are chemical-free. Some of the above listed aquatic species can be controlled more cost-effectively if you use chemical treatments. If you choose to use chemicals, please call us so we can connect you with reputable, safe chemical companies.
If you are in need of aquatic vegetation control, we are ready to help remedy the situation.
